Picking winning stocks is a tough game. I have heard that if you can get 60% accurate, you make money. That is not a seemly high percentage. But it is tough to get there. There are several criteria that you can use to evaluate a stock. You can use Fundamentals, basically diving into their financials, or Technical, which involves looking at charts, or a combination of both.
I personally like doing both, but lean more towards technical evaluation. I started doing this after I had been investing for a few years. I had a mature student who loved to talk stock investing. He taught me a lot. He steered me to a company called Stockcharts.com. If I had to rate the advice I have received over the years, using StockCharts.com would be by far the best advice I ever got. I can not trade without the information that they provide. They even give you limited access for free. I was dumb enough not to subscribe soon enough. They offer everything that you need. They even offered a 2 day course in Toronto, Canada that I took. It was invaluable.
One of the things they offer, is allowing you to write your own stock Scans and Alerts. This has been an invaluable tool for me. I love to program, and their system is straight forward. You can even use Chat GPT or Co Pilot to help you write a program. They offer a pile of pre done scans as well. They have a section called Chart School. I have never had a question that Chart School couldn’t answer. I can not say enough about their online support. It is fantastic. If you write a scan, they even allow you to back date it to check out if it is accurate.
I took a couple of TechniTrader courses (also highly recommended) and one of the charting systems they use is Stockcharts.com. Proves that StockCharts.com is a valuable tool. Between my brokerage, TDwaterhouse, and Stockcharts.com I have the access to the information that I need to do proper research, before I buy and sell. I have found that having excellent research tools is far more important that the cost of a trade.
I test every scan I write for 3 to 6 months to see if they work in every market condition. See the post Working or Playing the Market for more details. My daughter suggested I get AI to help me write a Scan. So I did. I had it write several, each with a different twist. AI wrote it in StockCharts.com syntax. When I tested them, the best accuracy I could get was 39%. I did get some ideas from it which I combined with a couple of my scans. 2 of the scans have been consistently over 60%. I just can not see investing without Stockcharts.com. They cover the Canadian exchanges (TSX, Venture, CSE, and NE) not just the United States markets which not everyone can say.
You need tools to be successful. StockCharts.com is the best tool in my tool box.
